Another rainy day; can’t and don’t want to travel too far from work. I’m craving a pie from Stolle, my favorite Russian pie bakery in-a-kiosk.
Today, the blond Russian miss offered me the special (there’s a lunch special? Really?), which is one pie slice (savory or sweet) with your choice of daily salad or soup.
I tried the soup: Vegetable broth. It was fine; warm and salty with bits of actual carrots and celery floating in the bottom of the travel bowl. Nothing spectacular to note about; might work with a cold.
On the other hand, the salmon pie, was out-of-this-world good. Not only the crust was decorated with a beautiful leaf (an uncut salmon pie has a piece of salmon curled into a rose peeking out from the crust, wow! I wish I got that slice…), but the fish was cooked perfectly, and was dressed in a tangy sour cream sauce dashed with dill.
According to the description of the pie, it was based on a French-Russian recipe from the 18th century. So simply beautiful.
Enjoy!
